Home Elevators Cost

Vision 550 Home ElevatorThe cost of home elevators depends on several factors. Now an affordable product for homes and small commercial buildings, home elevators come in several sizes, are designed to stop at up to five floors, require safety features, and may even be customized. A standard hydraulic elevator costs between $15,000 and $100,000, depending on size and custom features, and a pneumatic, or vacuum, elevator costs between $20,000 and $28,000, but the cost of installing a home elevator includes more than the car and hoistway.

A basic home elevator design is likely under $30,000, but the more features added or a larger size raises the price tag.

Elevators that go up more floors or that have larger cars are priced higher. Similarly, speed is a premium, and the cost of faster home elevators is greater. Additional features, such as the type of doors, hand rails, and a phone for emergencies also add up.

Custom elevators have turned into luxury items, and an elevator designed to your specifications will undoubtedly cost more than a standard metal fixture. Home elevators these days can be built with finished wood paneling, intricate metal, or stone, and these specialty materials warrant a higher cost.

Installation may cost nearly as much as the fixture, if not more, and some home elevators require more extensive procedures than others. Minimal installation is needed for a pneumatic elevator, for instance. The hoistway and car are installed into a home, and little to no construction is needed. Even with a panoramic design, a pneumatic elevator might not be best for your home. The car holds only one or two people and is not large enough for a wheelchair or for moving furniture.

More extensive home elevator installation can run from $20,000 to $30,000, and for a hydraulic elevator, multiple procedures are factored into this cost. Considered one of the safer designs for home elevators, hydraulic models need a pit and machine room created and need an exterior or interior hoistway constructed. You may need to hire an architect to draw up plans for these three parts.

Upkeep is a long-term cost for home elevators. Many areas require permits for home elevators to be purchased, and one may cost from $200 to $1,000. Inspections, as well, should be done yearly in many areas, and these, too, are part of the cost of owning a home elevator.
